As I mentioned in my last post, hot drinks are one of my favourite things about the autumn. I’ve been eagerly anticipating the season’s change so I could take advantage – what would autumn be without a good hot chocolate? It’s the symbolic drink of our childhood, indulgent and comforting – and it’s still just as satisfying now as when we were little. There’s nothing a good hot chocolate can’t fix.
Now, it probably won’t come as a surprise that as I’ve grown a bit older and become more health conscious, I’d be on the lookout for some way to make a healthy version of this childhood favorite. Sure, we all have our indulgences, but that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our nutrition on junk food.
The first step is simply to use raw cacao powder, a superfood which creates loads of energy and combats fatigue thanks to its high magnesium content, protects your heart and prevents cardiovascular disease, and also contains high quantities of antioxydants, preventing premature aging and improving skin hydration. Who says chocolate was bad for you? You just need to choose it properly ,and using raw cacao is the best way to really get the most of those health benefits. Of course, you can stop there if you just want a simple hot chocolate but I wanted to take this one all the way. So to that end, I added some date syrup to sweeten it a little -(rich in iron, vitamins and dietary fiber), a little coconut oil (improves bone health, strengthens immune system, helps maintain blood sugar and cholesterol levels), some turmeric (anti inflammatory, stimulates the body’s own antioxidant enzymes, improves brain fuction) and cinnamon (improves digestion, anti-oxydant, anti-bacterial). And the list goes on for all these ingredients! It’s impressive how easy it really can be to truly nourish yourself – you only have to know how.
If you have your hot chocolate with your breakfast or before a workout, I recommend adding a teaspoon of maca – it’s totally optional, but will give you the perfect energy boost to get you going!
I spent the whole week addicted to this superfood hot chocolate. It is simply divine, perfectly thick and creamy just like the cocoa I remember from when I was little, but it’s so much better in taste and nutritional value. I promise you, once you try it, you’ll never go back!
Superfood Hot Chocolate
A super healthy hot chocolate to make your treat even more special
- 1 cup of plant based milk (I always use Oatly) 240 ml
- 1 tbsp pure organic cacao powder
- 1 tsp organic coconut oil
- 1 tsp date syrup
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- a few dashes of cinnamon
- 1 tsp maca powder, for an extra boost optional
Simply add everything to a saucepan and gently warm.
Or you can warm the milk separately. I know some people don't like heating raw cacao powder because they are afraid it will loose its properties. But if you gently warm everything, it should be fine!
