I’ve noticed that turmeric seems to be all the fashion lately. I love the idea of making healthy eating into a movement – our health is so essential and depends on eating clean. Sure, maybe it’s just a fad, but it’s definitely one worth following. And I’ve been seeing turmeric everywhere lately. Turmeric lattes are all the rage in the cafes and health stores around Berlin, and I’ve even seen juice shots based on turmeric.
I wanted to see what all the fuss was about – what is this turmeric stuff, what’s so special about it, and what mysteries is it hiding beneath that vibrant yellow color? According to several scientific studies it seems that turmeric can:
- help prevent cancer and aid in its treatment
- treat stomach ulcers and inflammatory ailments
- reduce cholesterol and decrease the risk of cardiovascular illnesses
- treat liver disorders
- reduce inflammations of the skin and help to heal wounds
- treat rheumatic and menstrual pains
- treat gingivitis
And the list goes on!
Are you convinced? Me too. So, now you want to eat some turmeric, but you have no idea what to do with it? And all those turmeric lattes in the cafes are too expensive? I hear you. That’s why I’m here to offer you something quick, easy and delicious you can try – turmeric rice.
This recipe is simple to make but will give any dish a sophisticated look. Its vibrant yellow color is also visually appealing so you’re sure to have a nice looking plate.
Once you’ve got your super healthy rice all you need are some greens to go along with it. For this dish I went with coconut milk spinach. It only takes a few minutes to make and the coconut flavor pairs perfectly with the turmeric.

Turmeric Rice and Coconut Spinach
For the Rice
- 3/4 cup basmati rice
- 1 1/2 cup water or vegetable broth
- 1 onion
- 1-2 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp grounded turmeric
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
For the Spinach
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 garlic clove
- 1 bag spinach 125 grams
- 1/3 cup coconut milk
- pinch of salt
First step is to cook the rice: heat a medium pot with olive oil. Once it's hot add the onion and cook until transparent. Next add garlic cloves and cumin seeds. Cook for another 5 minutes.
Add the rice and turmeric and let it cook for about 3-4 minutes.
Add water or vegetable broth, bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until rice is tender. (Feel free to add more water or broth is the rice has absorbed all liquid but is still uncooked).
To cook the spinach, add olive oil to a skillet. Then add the garlic and cook for a few minutes. Add the spinach and stir a few minutes. Add in the coconut milk and stir until everything is cooked and warm.
Add everything to a bowl, add more veggies if you like and enjoy!
